MEDICAL LAKE – The School Board approved several annual grants including Title I, Title II, Title IV, and funding for the Learning Assistance Program along with moving several policies forward on September 28.
Hallett Elementary School is directly affected by the Title I grant, and the allotment of $262,093 was approved with most expenses going to staffing payroll. This grant will also cover other benefits and professional learning costs associated with Title I.
The Learning Assistance Program funding was also approved with a provision of $376,335 and another $7,803 for high poverty allocations. Again, the majority of this grant pays staffing costs, but this is spread between all Medical Lake schools.
Assistant Superintendent Kim Headrick stated Title II funding in the amount of $47,186 was approved to help with teacher and principal retention along with other professional learning costs.
Student support and academic enrichment funding for Title IV was also approved for $16,166 and those funds will help students find learning outlets beyond the classroom.
Several policies were also moved forward such as policy 2108 relevant to the Learning Assistance Program. Policies 3231 and 3520 relevant to student records and fees were also voted forward through the second readings.
Policy 5515 was introduced for a first reading and approved to move on to a second reading. Policy 5515 could open potential outlets for workforce staff to find help when dealing with workforce stress and/or traumatic situations.
Medical Lake Superintendent Tim Ames had some general notices as well and said the hard work of everyone to help prepare and open the facilities for the school year is greatly appreciated, and that the fast action of staff throughout the district has helped overcome the difficulties COVID presented early in the school year. Ames said that acting quickly according to protocol will help keep any potential COVID outbreaks from disrupting school events.
Several board members stated seeing the students participating in sports and other secondary events has been a highlight early in the school year. Assistant Superintendent Headrick said, “it’s just good to see the kids out enjoying activities.”
