Man hospitalized after being shot in chest

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – A woman is being held in the Spokane County Jail on $250,000 bail after allegedly shooting a man and leaving him alongside the road Sept. 24.

Katey Kaczar, 29, hometown not released, was booked into the jail the evening of the shooting.

She is facing charges of first-degree assault with a firearm and first-degree armed robbery, jail records show.

According to a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies responded to a reported shooting near the intersection of U.S. Highway 2 and South Stroup Road, just outside Reardan, at 7:30 a.m. Sept. 24.

Deputies arriving on scene found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest and an uninjured woman, the report said. Deputies started administering first aid until paramedics arrived to take the victim to the hospital.

The name of the shooting victim was not released.

Because of the severity of the incident Major Crime Units and Forensic Unit Technicians were called in to investigate the scene.

The investigation determined the man and woman he was with were getting a ride to Reardan via U.S. Highway 2 from Kaczar when she pulled over her older Dodge Caravan at South Stroup Road and demanded they hand over any valuables.

The situation got out of hand very quickly and Kaczar shot the man and fled in the van, leaving the victim and his companion on the side of the road, the report said.

Airway Heights police later located the van along Hayford Road.

Everyone in the van was apprehended without incident, the report said, noting Kaczar was identified as the shooter and arrested.

Other occupants were questioned and released without being charged, the report said.
