High school football kicks off Friday night

Blackhawks host Mount Spokane

CHENEY – The high school football season officially gets under way Friday night with Cheney at home and Medical Lake and Liberty (Spangle) on the road.

The Cheney Blackhawks will host the Mount Spokane Wildcats. Meanwhile, The Medical Lake Cardinals travel to Priest River, Idaho, to take on the Spartans.

To the south, the Liberty Lancers head to Jimmie Snider Field in Ritzville to take on the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos.

The games all kick off at 7 p.m.

Cheney returns a number of seniors including 6-foot-2 quarterback Josh Whiteley, tight end Michael dood, Konner Dobosh, running back Keenan Hahn, tight end/defensive end Nathanial Mitzimberg, tackle/guard/defensive end Ethan Hall, defensive tackle Wyatt Stollar, center/defensive tackle Jonathan Ingram, outside linebacker Jayden Dorsey, defensive tackle Marcell Morrison and Jackson Talarico.

The Blackhawks have moved up into the larger Class 3A ranks for sports this season, which promises to be more challenging.

Medical Lake is coming off a weekend tune up in Ritzville, where the Cardinals scrimmaged against Lind-Ritzville, Colfax, Davenport, Jenkins (Chewelah) and Dayton-Waitsburg.

The Cardinals, too, return several seniors to the grid iron.

Carson Tappero, a 5-foot-11 running back is among those returning players, as is wide receiver Tyler Sembly, tackle/guard/defensive tackle Caleb Fulleton, wide receiver/strong safety Zach Endreson, wide receiver Landon Hall, defensive end/tackler Tyson Cooper, Xander Black, wide receiver Joe Oliver, defensive tackle Tristin Jones, quarterback Eugene Haas III, middle linebacker/fullback Jalijah Meacham, wide receiver Duncan Norwood and Owen Stevens.

Medical Lake plays in Class 1A football in Washington state; Priest River plays in the Class 3A division in Idaho.

Neither team is ranked in their respective state.

In other action around southern Spokane County, the Liberty (Spangle) Lancers head to Ritzville to take on the Broncos.

The Spangle teams comes in ranked No. 11 in the Class 2B standings, and the Lancers have a senior-laden team.

Seniors returning to the field this season include wide receiver/free safety Josh Stern, wide receiver/corner back Wyatt Sego, wide receiver/cornerback London Foland, quarterback/free safety Logan Wilson and center/defensive tackle Logan Grumbly
