Al-Anon can help family and friends

September is National Recovery Month. When a family member has a problem with alcohol, the effects are felt by their immediate family and extended family members and friends. Family members may experience feelings of abandonment, anxiety, fear, anger, concern, embarrassment or guilt.

Alcohol is the most commonly used addictive substance in the United States. 17.6 million people or one in every 12 adults, suffer from alcohol abuse or dependence. More than 7 million children live in a household where at least one parent is dependent on or has abused alcohol.

Al-Aon is not Alcoholics Anonymous(AA) and is not designed for those who have a drinking problem, but instead Al-Anon is a support group for those who are troubled by someone else’s drinking. There are meetings every day of the week, in person and on-line, for those looking for hope and support.

To find a meeting or to learn more about what Al-Anon Family Groups are and how this support group can help family members and friends of alcoholics overcome the effects of living with a loved one’s problem drinking go to www.al-anon.org. For local information contact 509-456-2125.
