Redistricting committee seeks public input on commission realignment

SPOKANE — The Spokane County Independent Redistricting Committee is redrawing local county commissioner districts, increasing the number of commissioners from its current three to five due to the county’s population exceeding 400,000 residents.

The committee is seeking public input on the process, and is holding several public information meetings and hearings to gather residents thoughts. The new commission structure will go into place in 2022, with new commissioners elected during that election cycle and will be elected to their seats by voters in the district they represent instead of a county-wide process.

Two meetings will be taking place on the West Plains. The first is Sept. 30 at the Cheney Public Library, 610 1st St., from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. The public information session can be attended in-person and online via a call in, 253-215-8782, meeting ID 970 8247 9718, use pass code 171862.

The second meeting is Oct. 7, a public hearing from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at Northern Quest Resort & Casino’s Kalispel Ballroom, 100 North Hayford Road in Airway Heights. The call-in is the same number, ID and pass code as the Cheney meeting.

An agenda with Zoom link will be available at http://www.redistrictspokaneco.com.

According to recently released 2020 Census data, Spokane County has grown by over 58,000 residents in the past 10 years, increasing from 471,221 in 2010 to 539,339 in 2020.

A draft redistricting plan is to be submitted by the committee by Aug. 24, with a final plan due Oct. 23. Online comments can also be submitted through a comment form on the committee’s webpage above or at [email protected].
