The Goodwill Cheney donation trailer located in Jarms Ace Hardware parking lot on Cheney Spokane Road, will be closing Aug. 1 due to region wide staffing shortages. The final day of operation will be July 31, 2021. Employees at the location have been offered positions at other facilities within Spokane.
“We want to thank our Cheney donors, who have shown such support for Goodwill’s programs over the years through their donations,” said Heather Alexander, Sr. Associate Vice President of Marketing and Communications, in a news release. Alternative donation sites can be found at the following locations: Downtown Spokane: 130 E. Third Avenue, one block east of Division; South Hill: 2927 E. 27th Ave. and Northwest Boulevard: 2282 North Ash Street.
The site closure comes in the wake of a nationwide staffing shortage that has been plaguing business since the decline of COVID related restrictions. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, March of 2021 boasted a job opening rate of 5.3% with 8.1 million available positions. This marks a 43% increase from the year prior when COVID shutdowns crippled many businesses.
According to Heather Alexander, Cheney and its surrounding communities have not been immune to the shortage of employees. “We are experiencing the same staffing challenges that most employers are facing.”
