AIRWAY HEIGHTS — The City Council met on July 6, only a couple days after the Independence Day celebration, for a holiday recap and official action on multiple study session agenda items.
According to Police Chief Brad Richmond, the police department received 78 calls for service on July 4, which was double their usual number. The only serious call was for a three-car collision after someone had a seizure, which distracted the car’s driver and caused the collision.
Fire Chief Mitch Metzger reported 10 calls for aid, two that were firework-related, nine that were for fires (eight of which were firework related) and one for a car wreck. The fire department confiscated more fireworks than ever, but other than that it was a normal July 4. No firework stands sold out of fireworks this year.
A public hearing was held for the six-year transportation plan improvement update. The public had been encouraged to either attend or send written comments through email, but there was no public comment on the plan. The same went for the adoption of development agreements for Airway Auto Licensing and International Church of the Foursquare gospel. All measures were passed.
The council also went over a purchase approval register. T*O Engineers were paid $11,234.75 for their engineering services in projects like the Hayford and US-2 design and transportation consulting. Century West Engineers were paid $25,126.94 for their engineering services on projects such as drinking water contamination issues, property acquisitions and on-call consulting. Witherspoon Kelley received $21,011 for their legal services. The total was $57,372.69.
The council also approved the design of the 10th Avenue corridor extension project, which will run from Garfield to Hayford, as well as the design scope for the Hayford pedestrian crossing beacon. They approved two ordinances, authorizing both gas and electric franchise agreements with Avista.
Stephanie Lamb’s application to the planning commission was approved, which means the city now has a full planning commission.
