Rieckmann wins GSL titles in sprints, javelin

CHENEY - Senior Ryan Rieckmann swept to wins in all three of his track and field events while the Blackhawks baseball team ensured it wouldn't have to wait until next year to earn its first Greater Spokane League win as spring sports teams concluded action last week.

Baseball

The Blackhawks got an offensive explosion to get into the win column in their final game of the season. Carson Jefferies went 3 for 4, scoring three runs and driving in two more as Cheney shellacked Ferris 16-0 on May 14. Julian Chabot was 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs as Cheney exploded for 13 hits and capitalized on 10 Saxons' errors. Justin Ward got the win on the mound, scattering three hits while walking two and striking out five.

"Yes, it felt pretty darn good," Cheney manager Rob Beamer said when asked about the victory.

Earlier in the week, the Blackhawks fell 9-2 to Mt. Spokane on May 12 and 11-3 to University on May 13. Cheney ends the season at 1-13.

Soccer

The Blackhawks wrapped up their inaugural season in the GSL with a mini-win streak, beating Ferris 6-2 on May 12 and ending with a 4-3 win over University on May 14. Not stats were available at press time.

Softball

Madison McDowell pitched a one-hitter and the Lady Blackhawks scored 10 runs on 10 hits to easily down winless Lewis and Clark 10-0 in opening round playoff action May 11. McDowell walked three and struck out seven in five innings, while Sedona Erickson had two hits offensively.

Cheney's playoff run came to an end with a 10-3 loss to visiting Mead on May 12. Tatum Sloan had two hits in the Lady Blackhawks seven-hit attack, with the defense committing three errors behind starter Isabella King.

Cheney ends the season at 6-7 overall, 6-6 in the GSL.

Track and field

The Cheney boys placed fourth overall while the girls were eighth in the season-ending GSL district competition Wednesday – Friday at Central Valley High School.

Senior Ryan Rieckmann pulled the trifecta, winning the 100-meter dash in 11.3 seconds, the 200 in 22.40 and the javelin with a throw of 172 feet, 1 inch. He also teamed with Dusten Butikofer, Braxton Hinton and Ian Schwendiman to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 43.81.

Senior Beckett Schoenleber had the other top-three finish for Cheney, placing third in the 800 with a personal record of 1:57.89.

Hannah Ayers had the highest finish for the Blackhawk girls, setting a PR of 49.37 for third in the 300-meter hurdles.
