Cardinals boys tennis remains unbeaten

MEDICAL LAKE — Medical Lake boys’ tennis kept its record unblemished following a pair of Northeast A League wins last week, both by 4-1 scores vs. Newport (April 19) and Deer Park (April 21).

The Cardinals (4-0) swept singles play with Tristan Francis winning 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Josh Burt cruising 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. “Josh used this as an opportunity to work on serving and play strategies he’s trying to develop,” his coach, Brian Tellez wrote in an email.

Ryen Gibby and Jonah Lindsey were winners at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-4 while Cameron Dickey and Noah Young won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

“Ryen and Jonah both played great tennis in this match,” Tellez said. “I’m seeing more and improved communication on the court as they become more comfortable as partners,” he added.

RJ Puckett and Isaac Barr won their first set 7-5 but the next two went to Newport 5-7, 5-7 and seemed to know how in a rematch they can turn things around, Tellez noted.

Against Deer Park, the Stags had limited numbers and wound up forfeiting each of the doubles pairings.

Burt was the lone winner in competition for Medical Lake at No. 2 doubles 6-0, 6-2. “Josh played smart during this match,” Tellez said. “He kept his groundies deep to his opponent’s backhand and had control of the match throughout.”

The Cardinals hosted Lakeside on April 26 and Riverside April 28.
