Barriere earns third POW award

DAVIS, Calif. – For the third time in six weeks of Big Sky Conference football, Eric Barriere, Eastern Washington’s All-America quarterback has been selected by the league office as the ROOT Sports Offensive Player of the Week.

He helped lead Eastern to a 32-22 victory April 3 over 11th-ranked University of California -Davis in Davis, Calif.

It was the sixth honor of his 36-game career.

Eastern out-gained the Aggies, 563-397, in the game as the Walter Payton Award candidate passed for 392 yards and three touchdowns on his way to finishing with 435 yards of total offense.

Barriere completed 30-of-41 passes, and also rushed six times for 43 yards.

Fossen is Big Sky Field Athlete of the Week

SPOKANE – Eastern Washington University senior Morgan Fossen is the latest to add to the Eagles’ pole vault legacy.

She was honored April 5 as this week’s Big Sky Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.

Fossen had an 8-inch improvement to move into second in school history with a pole vault of 13 foot, 8 ½ inches at the Whitworth H.I.R. Invitational in Spokane.

Eastern soccer splits with Idaho

CHENEY – Eastern Washington split a pair of home soccer matches last weekend with Idaho, winning 2-0 on Sunday, April 4, after losing by the same count the previous day.

In the last home match of the 2021 spring schedule, and on a day to honor program seniors, it was a pair playing at home the final time that ignited the Eagles.

Seniors McKaley Goffard and Taylor Matheny each scored one goal during the match.

In the loss, Eastern Coach Chad Bodnar seemed to have the problem dialed in.

“We created a lot of chances, we just didn’t finish inside of the 18-yard box,”’ Bodnar said.

“We haven’t been sharp inside the box in the last three games and it’s cost us.”

Eastern improves to 4-3-2 overall (3-1-2 in league play) while the Vandals fall to an even 5-5 overall record (5-3 in conference).

Eastern concludes the regular season on the road as it twice faces conference foe Montana – on April 9 and again April 11 in Missoula, Mont.
