CHENEY - The Blackhawks girls swim team won 10-of-11 events to capture its second straight Eastern Washington District title in competition March 25-26 at University of.
The only event Cheney did not win was the 50-yard freestyle; the Blackhawks girls finished second.
Four Cheney swimmers accounted for seven of the eight individual event wins, as well as victories in all three relays – including the 200-yard medley where the four teamed up to produce a new school record of 1 minute, 54.11 seconds.
The mark was well below the state meet qualifying time of 1:56.00 for a Class 3A school had a state meet been planned for this year.
Jade and Asia Gere together with Janie Richards led Cheney with a pair of wins each.
Jade Gere won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.42 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.14. She was also named Swimmer of the Meet for the wins and her participation on two first-place relay teams.
Richards won the 100-yard freestyle in 1:00.23 and the 200-yard freestyle in 2:01.47, with Asia Gere winning the 200-yard medley in 2:20.09 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:32.21.
Adelyn O'Dell won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:07.66.
Three of the four should return for the Blackhawks next season, with O'Dell the only senior in the group.
Jade Gere and Richards are juniors while Asia Gere is a sophomore, and all three competed in the 2019 Class 2A state meet.
"We unfortunately do not move forward to state due to COVID, but we ended our season for the second year in the row taking the league title and district champions title," Asst. Coach Courtney Root said in an email. "We are very excited for hopefully competing in a regular schedule fall 2021-22 season."
