RIVERDALE, Utah – Carter Ledwith and Kaylin Sheley were the top finishers for the Eastern Washington University cross country teams as the Eagles competed in the 2021 Big Sky Conference Winter Championships for their second meet of the season.
The Eastern men and women both finished 10th among the 11 teams in the league.
Ledwith led the Eastern men by finishing 38th on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 25:55.7. Sheley was the Eagles’ top women’s finisher, placing 47th with a time of 19:22.2 on a 5,000-meter course. Phoenix Aguilar finished six places behind Sheley with a time of 19:38.1.
“Phoenix highlighted the performances today,” head coach Sam Read said. “She finished 79th last year at conference and this year she placed 53rd. Kaylin also improved this year, going from 60th place to 47th. They both ran tough and I am proud of the way they performed.”
The teams that took part in the championships were Eastern Washington, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah and Weber State — who hosted the meet.
Southern Utah won the men’s competition and Northern Arizona was victorious for the women.
This championship meet will play a major role in determining which teams and individuals will be selected to participate in the NCAA Division I National Championships, scheduled for March 15, in Stillwater, Okla. The NCAA D1 Oversight Committee will be the group making the selection. The participants who qualify should be announced by March 5 at 5 p.m.
