Eagle women down Whitworth in net action

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington University women’s tennis squad hosted the Whitworth Pirates in its home opener of the 2021 spring season and secured a 7-0 victory on Feb. 26 at the Jim Thorpe Fieldhouse. Eastern collects its second win in a row and improves to a 2-4 overall record.

Eastern dominated in doubles play allowing only one point to be scored in each doubles match.

In singles play, EWU limited every match to two sets and saw five Eagles allow the Pirates only one point or less per set.

“Good win for the team today. We wanted to go out there with really good intensity and energy and we wanted to stick with our style of tennis,” head coach Dustin Hinson said. “I thought we were able to accomplish that and I’m happy with the level we maintained throughout the match. I’m proud of the effort to stay mentally tough from start to finish, without any let down. We will keep building for more success in our upcoming matches.”

The Eagles continue their unbeaten streak versus the Pirates as it expands to eight-straight matches conceding only two points in total, and an impressive 19-5 all-time series record.

The Eagles compete against neighboring program Gonzaga in Spokane on March 3 at 5 p.m. Pacific time.
