CHENEY – Officials at Multicare / Rockwood have confirmed that the organization’s physical therapy clinic at 1727 1st St. has been closed permanently.
“In an effort to streamline our physical therapy services, MultiCare Rockwood Clinic has closed its Cheney location,” Multicare media relations manager Kevin Maloney said in a prepared statement. “All patients were notified of this change in service and are able to continue receiving treatment at any of our five remaining facilities throughout the Spokane-area.”
It’s the second Multicare Rockwood facility to close on the West Plains in just over a year. The Multicare Rockwood Physical Therapy clinic in Medical Lake closed in late 2019.
Like Medical Lake, however, Cheney’s main clinic at 19 N. 7th St. is still open.
Cheney senior planner Brett Lucas confirmed that Multicare Rockwood had not renewed its lease with building owner Dick Roccanova. He added it’s likely the organization closed the facility because of a lack of clientele.
“Cheney is a small enough market, you’ve got to have enough clientele to make it worthwhile,” Lucas said. “You need a population of 10,000, 15,000 to make some businesses work.”
Roccanova owns two buildings and the land at that location, and has submitted final binding site plans for construction of a third. Lucas said the building will be similar to the other two at the site, a professional/medical office facility.
Maloney said the closure of its Cheney physical therapy clinic did not affect the employment status of any members of Multicare’s team.
“All providers and staff have transferred to other MultiCare locations,” he added.
