EWU men open tennis season against Gonzaga

CHENEY – The Eastern Washington University men’s tennis team returns to competition, opening against the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Jan. 23. The Eagles look to compete against nine non-conference opponents and five Big Sky Conference foes, before concluding the season with the Big Sky Conference Championships on May 1-2 in Phoenix, Ariz.

“We are very excited to get back on the tennis court and have been looking forward to this new schedule,” said head coach Jared Burnham. “It will be great to compete against some stronger teams and challenge my players, especially during a year like this.”

Before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EWU men’s tennis team found a victory in its last match as they hosted Idaho State to a 5-2 conference-win, ending the season with a 2-9 overall and 1-3 conference record.

This season, the Eagles begin the 2021 spring schedule facing Gonzaga on the road on Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. Pacific time, followed by a double header versus the University of Washington on Jan. 27 in Seattle, Wash., starting at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. PT.

EWU’s first home match will be on Feb. 7 as they host Utah State before heading to Oregon on Feb. 19-20 to face the University of Portland and the University of Oregon, respectively. The Eagles then go on a four-match home stretch as they host Whitworth on Feb. 26, Portland State on Feb. 27, Idaho State on March 6, and Omaha on March 18.

EWU travels back to Spokane, Wash., for round two against the Bulldogs on Mar. 19 before hosting its fifth and final home-match against conference rival Idaho on Mar. 26.

The Eagles find themselves on the road all through April beginning with Lewis-Clark State College on April 2 and Whitman College on April 4. To conclude the spring season, EWU competes against conference opponents Montana State on April 16 and Montana on April 18.

The Big Sky Conference Championships will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 1-2 with the top-four teams earning a bid.

EWU departs only one senior in Mikayel Khachatryan, who finished last season with a 2-1 mark in conference action, as they look to return six players including seniors Martin Bats and Jeremy Mueller to continue their efforts.

The Eagles also return juniors Manuel Balce and Wout Doumen, along with sophomores Erik Grimes and Bruno Ortega. Additionally, Eastern Washington welcomes one newcomer in Ryan Isgatt.
