MISSOULA – Cheney High School senior Ben McGourin signed a letter of intent to play football where his older brother is now playing — the University of Montana.
Ben McGourin, 6 foot, 2 inches, 215 pounds will join the Grizzlies as a true freshman in fall camp and is listed as a defensive lineman. He is one of 19 players to sign letters of intent to play in Missoula – with all but three others coming from the state of Montana.
McGourin is a two-star rated prospect by 247 Sports. Like many athletes, he was unable to play a fall football season due to COVID-19 protocols. He was a first-team, All-Great Northern League selection as a junior despite playing in six of 10 games due to injury.
“Ben will continue to get bigger and stronger, as you’d expect,” Grizzlies head coach Bobby Hauck said in a news release. “He was a linebacker and his team’s MVP at Cheney High School, in the neighborhood of Eastern Washington. But he has the size and ability to play multiple positions in our defensive front seven.”
McGourin’s older brother Jacob committed to Montana in 2018, playing four games in 2019 as a freshman where he totaled four tackles, two sacks and one pass deflection. He redshirted in 2020.
Ben McGourin is the son of Casey and Melissa McGourin, with his father playing football at Eastern Washington University. He also competes in track, and was extended an offer to play football at another Big Sky Conference school, Idaho.
