Airway Heights plans Christmas events

AIRWAY HEIGHTS—The city is partnering with several community organizations to put on several pandemic-friendly virtual, drive-in or distanced events in December.

Parks and Recreation and Community Services Director J.C. Kennedy shared four events that the city is planning. The events were in various stages of planning as of press time, so he had more details to share for some events than others.

The city is partnering with the Airway Heights Kiwanis Club, The Heights Church, Dairy Queen, volunteer firefighters and Tammy Marshall State Farm to facilitate the events.

Updates will be coming when made available, as all events are subject to change with the evolving COVID-19 situation.

Tree lighting ceremony

It looks like the annual tree lighting ceremony at Sunset Park is a go, drive-in style. Residents can park on Lawson Street for the event on Dec. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The city plans to have a short firework display following the tree lighting, pending approval from the fire department. Santa is also expected to make a drive-in appearance on a fire truck, courtesy of the fire department volunteers.

Drive-in movie

The Heights Church will be showcasing Jon Favreau’s classic Christmas flick, “Elf,” starring Will Ferrell, drive-in style to preclude the tree lighting ceremony on Dec. 19. Kennedy said Wolffy’s Breakfast Burgers and Brew may be taking orders from cars and delivering them to movie patrons, but the city hadn’t solidified those plans as of press time.

Letters from Santa

The city is planning a program where parents can fill out a form about their children so their children can receive a letter from Santa. Tammy Marshall State Farm is partnering with the city to help generate those letters.

25 Days of Christmas

Families can participate in a variety of virtual activities starting Dec. 1 and post pictures of themselves doing said activities online. The Heights Church, which is heading up this event, hasn’t nailed down what the virtual activities will be, Kennedy said, but the city expects to have the plans solidified soon.
