Westwood MS fun runs goes to virtual challenge

WINDSOR – Fun runs play a huge part in funding local associated student body school events, but with Spokane County still not at a point where large gatherings of individuals are allowed under Covid-19 protocols, schools have looked to other means to fundraise.

At Cheney School District’s Westwood Middle School, eight student leadership officers put their innovative heads together at the start of the school year and came up with an indoor version of the fun run that everyone could do. According to an Oct. 16 news release, the officers created a challenge where the entire family could compete to see how far they could run, walk or hike in one hour.

Registration was required, along with a $15 entry fee. Each registered participant received a school-themed face mask and a list of additional challenges to complete between Sep. 26 – Oct.4 to receive prizes. These were best team name, best school gear, Creative Reflection, Creative Cairn, positive message built from nature and most creative background.

The entire student body and staff voted for the most creative photo submissions and determined the following winners of these challenges.

Best team name: 4 Schmitts and Giggles

Best school gear: Team Wiley

Creative reflection: Bear’s Crew

Creative cairn: The Beckers

Positive message built from nature: Team Brown Squared

Most creative background: The Weathers

Each of these families were to receive a pizza delivery by Westwood’s wolverine mascot, Rocko, Friday, Oct. 16.  There were 138 participants in the challenge.

While funds raised didn’t nearly approached what has been done in the past with the Fun Run, Westwood Assistant Principal and Athletics Director Tamara Skillingstad said the purpose of the event was less on money than it was “focused on providing our families and community with a fun event.”
