Probe: Prison isn't at fault in inmate's death

STAFF AND NEWS REPORTS

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — An investigation into the death of an inmate at Airway Heights Corrections Center has concluded the prison isn’t at fault.

According to findings released last week, the Washington State Patrol concluded the state Department of Corrections is not to blame in the June 2 death of convicted pedophile 70-year-old Robert Munger while in prison.

Munger, who was previously convicted of raping multiple children, was struck about 14 times in the head by cellmate Shane Goldsby, who also stomped on his head and kicking him, the investigation showed. Munger later died of his injuries at an area hospital.

According to the investigation, Goldsby is the older brother of one of Munger’s victims, but Corrections officials were unaware of the relationship.

Goldsby is charged with murder in the slaying and is being held in the penitentiary’s Intensive Management Unit.
