A Level 2 Evacuation notice has been given by Fire District No. 10 for residents between Deep Creek and Brooks Rd due to a vegetation fire in the area west of Airway Heights and Fairchild Air Force Base Monday afternoon.
Residents from Deep Creek to Ritchey Road are asked to be ready to leave "at a moment's notice," per an emergency alert from Fire District No. 10. South Christensen and South Brooks roads are currently closed. Highway 2 closed momentarily Monday afternoon due to the fire jumping to the south, but has since re-opened.
Between 20-50 acres have burned, according to Fire District No. 10 Division Chief Debby Dodson. Forward progress has been stopped on the fire. Structures have burned, but crews are still evaluating whether those structures are residential or outbuildings.
Over 30 fire agencies from Spokane County responded to the fire. Dodson said they don't expect state mobilization to be needed for the blaze.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Update: Evacuation orders have been lifted on this fire, dubbed the "Christensen" fire, as of Sept. 10 at 6 a.m.
This is a developing story. More information will be shared when available.
