Greetings from your new Free Press reporter

Hello readers, my name is Drew Lawson and I’ve recently come on as a reporter for Free Press Publishing, working for both the Cheney Free Press and Davenport Times.

I grew up in Vancouver, WA, surrounded by my parents and three younger siblings. I’m a huge sports fan, particularly the NFL, NBA and NCAA football and basketball. My favorite teams are the Seattle Seahawks, Portland Trail Blazers and Seattle Mariners. I enjoy hiking and road trips while exploring places I’ve never been before.

I graduated high school in 2016. I went to college at Eastern Washington University and just graduated in June with a bachelor’s degree in news editorial journalism. At EWU, I spent two years at the school paper, The Easterner. I filled a variety of roles, from sports reporter to sports editor to co-managing editor. (Drop @easternersports and @_TheEasterner a follow on Twitter if you use that platform.)

I enjoyed experiences such as covering the football team on the road in cities like Seattle and Missoula. I witnessed the bizarre cancelation of the Big Sky men’s basketball tournament due to COVID-19 concerns in Boise. I helped break stories about EWU cancelling in-person commencement and a football player facing charges of identity theft.

Through my collegiate experiences at The Easterner, I realized that I’m passionate about journalism. I value the sharing of truthful information without bias or twisting the facts. I believe that the public needs to be informed of what is happening in the community, which will hopefully in turn inspire the public to be more involved in the community.

I also found that I love to tell the stories of the community. Many times, people’s great work goes unnoticed, but journalism can also help inform the community of these stories. I chose journalism as a career path for these two reasons. I love discovering information and then sharing it. I also love telling stories and learning what’s happening in whatever community I happen to be involved with…in this case, it’s your community.

I’ve lived in Cheney for nearly three years, and am thrilled that this town was not only my college stop, but also the start of my professional career. I’m also excited to broaden my horizons across the West Plains and Highway 2 corridor. I look forward to learning, growing and sharing what’s happening locally with you.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or give me a call at 360-768-7513. I’m excited to get to work!
