School district to hold lighting ceremony April 17
CHENEY -- School district officials have announced that #BeTheLight" event will take place Friday, April 17, to honor the graduating class of 2020 members who have lost their spring quarter events, sports and school year associations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event will take place at 8:20 p.m. when the lights at Cheney High School's Tom Oswald Field will be turned on for 20 minutes. As with similar events around the region and nation, residents are invited to drive by and honk their horns, wave and/or cheer in honor of the seniors.
In a news release, Cheney High School Principal Troy Heuett said people taking part are to remain in their cars in order to continue practicing social distancing required to slow the spread of the disease. All parking lots will be blocked off with the exception of the high school bus loop, which will be utilized by traffic to drive into.
"We encourage everyone to drive safely, being considerate of the community and homes you will be driving by," Heuett said. "Do not stop your vehicles. This is a drive-by event and not a gathering."
Vehicles should approach the high school from the north along North 6th Street, turn into the bus loop and then exit with a right turn back onto North 6th. Vehicles should then take a right onto Cedar Street, another right onto North 8th Street to return past the football field up the hill and then right onto Golden Hills Drive if desiring to return to North 6th Street.
Other schools in the are conducted similar events last Friday night, with more expected to take part this Friday.
"Feel free to wear your Red and Black, and we look forward to hearing the honks," Heuett said "Go Blackhawks!!"
