Artist Resa Blatman's "Ghost Net 2," acrylic, colored pencil and ink on Mylar is one of the works featured in her exhibit "Slow Burn" at Eastern Washington University's Gallery of Art.
CHENEY – Eastern Washington University's Gallery of Art is exhibiting the works of contemporary artist Resa Blatman at the gallery located in the Art Building at the center of the Fine Arts Complex.
"Slow Burn" runs now through April 24, Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., with the exception of March 23-27 when the gallery will be closed for spring break. Admission is free.
According to a news release, Blatman is a contemporary artist whose works present a visual feast of imagination through the undulations and movement of paint and three-dimensional form. Her works are inspired by occurrences such as bird migration, rising tides and algae blooms, raging fires, coral bleaching, and warming/acidic oceans.
The resulting works offer the viewer a melancholic reality while asking them to consider the effect on - and transformation of - our landscape and natural resources, thereby providing the viewer an opportunity to contemplate the overwhelming changes to our environment. Ultimately, Blatman's work speaks to environmental concerns while skillfully traversing the future of an Earthly dystopia combined with the underlaying allure of beauty, because beauty and regeneration reside even in the darkest expressions of society and nature.
"To reflect this concept visually, the drawings feature stunning coral reefs on dark backgrounds or abandoned "ghost nets" ethereally drifting through the ocean waters," Blatman writes in her artist's statement. "The installations are cut, poured, layered, painted, and constructed into swirling three-dimensional waterscape/universes."
Blatman is a full-time, visual artist based in Somerville, Massachusetts, who works with various media and materials. She received a master's of fine arts in painting from Boston University in 2006, and a bachelor's of fine arts in graphic design from the Massachusetts College of Art + Design in 1995, where she taught senior-level graphic design from 1997-2012.
Blatman exhibits her work and presents artist talks at colleges, universities, galleries, and museums throughout the U.S. She recently completed a large-scale, public art project for Texas A&M University and is currently working on a new public art installation for the Denver Health Outpatient Medical Center. Recent and upcoming solo and group exhibitions include, the New Bedford Art Museum in New Bedford, Mass., Childs Gallery in Boston, The Gallery at Mayyim Hayyim in Newton, Mass., and SACI NY Gallery in New York, N.Y.
