Eastern Washington University’s Women’s and Gender Studies Program and Women’s and Gender Education (WAGE) Center has been taking a look at immigration issues through a quarter-long program dedicated to educating the community.
EWU’s 2020 Activist in Residence Lili Navarrete has been providing a focus on these issues to non-immigrants through the lens of an immigrant in a series of Wednesday lectures, which continue through March 11 at Monroe Hall. Navarrete immigrated with her family to Spokane from Mexico City in 1988, earning a bachelor’s of arts degree in international affairs from EWU.
“I want to help them (non-immigrants) learn about the myths and misconceptions regarding immigrants and U.S. immigration policy,” Navarrete said in a news release.
As the director of public affairs and Raiz at Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington North Idaho, Navarrete works for reproductive rights, immigrants and marginalized communities. She is also the vice president of Hispanic Business/Professional Association and a Washington State Commissioner on Hispanic Affairs appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee.
In its seventh year, the Activist in Residents program “exemplifies the Women’s Gender Studies Program’s ongoing commitment to generating opportunities for interdisciplinary feminist analysis and knowledge creation while fostering leadership in intersectional activism,” according to the news release.
The program takes place March 4 and March 11 in Monroe Hall room 207, beginning at 3:30 p.m. All events are open to the public.
