Cardinal alum establishes new scholarship fund

Medical Lake Dollars for Scholars (MLDFS) announced that Matthew Brzostowski, Ph.D., a 1976 graduate of Medical Lake High School, donated $15,000 to establish a new endowed scholarship in the sciences.

Dr. Brzostowski, chief geoscientist with WesternGeCo, a division of Schlumberger Oil Company in Houston, Texas, is hoping to encourage high school students to consider pursuing careers in physics, geophysics, geology, geosciences, earth sciences or mathematics, according to a MLDFS press release.

This is the first endowment at the high school level for Brzostowski, who noted his experiences at MLHS, especially in Larry Petersen’s physics class, propelled him toward the sciences as an undergraduate at WSU, graduate courses at the Colorado School of Mines, and later at the University of Texas at Dallas for his Ph.D. in geosciences.

Brzostowski has set up multiple endowments and scholarships to give back to many of the education institutions that paved the way for him to become a scientist and explorationist, solving real-world problems.

His focus has been in oil and gas discovery within the industry, and widening the scope of knowledge about the Earth, the Moon and the planets. He was interviewed for the 2009 NASA astronaut program as a geoscientist.

The endowment, set up through MLDFS, will provide ongoing support for students for many years as it continues to grow. Other Medical Lake High School graduates and community members who are interested in supporting the sciences are encouraged to build the endowment by donating to the fund through MLDFS, that is also coordinating with the high school which received funding from Dr. Brzostowski to enhance the science programs.
