Cheney earns first trip to regionals

CHENEY – The gymnastics squad made a little history last Friday night at Greater Spokane League district competition at Old Albertsons Gymnastics Center on North Division.

The 2019-2020 Blackhawks became the first to advance to regional competition as a team in the short history of Cheney High School gymnastics. The Blackhawks edged Shadle Park 130-129 for third place, thus earning them a trip to competition in Everett on Feb.15.

“I’m very proud of them for making it as a team,” first-year head coach Moriah Knowles said.

Two Blackhawks earned top-10 placings at districts. Junior Lauren O’Callaghan was sixth on bars, tied for sixth on vault, seventh in all-around and 10th on the floor exercise. Senior Faith Shinner was tied for 10th on vault.

Joining O’Callaghan and Shinner in competition at regionals will be Hanne Schmidt, Sienna Fortune, Kaylin Davis, Sidnie Pacheco, Grace Mulcahy, Aubrey Reynolds and Sarianne Winters.

The Blackhawks wrapped up their regular-season schedule with a meet Jan. 23 at Central Valley. No individual results were available, Knowles said, but Cheney managed to out-point Rogers (127-119) and North Central (127-73) to run its GSL mark to 3-6, 9-15 overall.
