DEER PARK — The Cardinal wrestling team ended the season with a loss at the hands of the Stags at Thursday, Jan. 30 dual in a close 41-30 loss.
“We fell a little short,” head coach Matt Leenhouts said.
Medical Lake’s Victor long took out Max Leonard in the 152-pound weight class on a 5:46 pin, and Cardinal standout Ethan Davis made quick work of Deer Park’s Ivan Bogle with a 45 second pin, while Card Brandon Giles, wrestling at 145, beat Logan Erickson on a 5-4 decision.
Isaac Blevin beat Stag Adam Frank in a hard-fought 10-9 decision at 182, while in the 106-weight class, Cardinal Angel Mendez only needed 34 seconds to pin Deer Park’s Avery Newman, and Benjamin Henry was equally quick with a 58-second pin of Gage Fisher.
Cardinal Aden Carl lost in a technical pin to Deer Park’s Nathan Gregory in the 126-pound class, while Cardinal Jon Anderson lost in a 2:34 pin to Ethan Frank at 138, and Nate Stevens fought it out in the 160-pound class only to lose in a 10-4 decision to Stag Matthew Jorgenson.
Medical Lake’s Joe Griffey lost to Koa Barns in an 11-6 decision in the 195 class, while 220-pound heavy weight Gavin Chaffee lost in a 1:14 pin to Deer Park’s Colton Joralemon and 285-pound Cardinal wrestler Colton Ellis was pinned by Stag Jessie Overton in 1:15.
The Cardinals had one forfeit at the 132 class.
The Cardinals closed the season tied with Deer Park at 5-1, and lost in a tie-breaker to the Stags to take second in the Northeast A League, the highest the Cards have finished in the NEA since 2005, according to Leenhouts.
The team will be heading to Freeman on Feb. 7 – 8 to compete in districts, and if all goes well there, Deer Park for regionals on Feb. 15.
State championships are scheduled for Feb. 21 – 22 in the Tacoma Dome.
The Cardinals were ranked fifth in the state 1A classification by Washington Wrestling Report — right behind fourth-place Deer Park — as of Jan. 28.
