PULLMAN – The Cheney High boys swimming team wrapped up its regular season last Tuesday with a dual meet in Pullman, losing to the Greyhounds 122-48.
Trae Babcock and Matthew Norman each notched first and second-place finishes in their events. Babcock won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 51.09 seconds, placing second in the 50 freestyle in 23.31. Norman captured the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:34.97 and was second in the 100 butterfly in 59.39.
Other top-three finishes for Cheney went to Jared Geschke, placing second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.75 while Ben Schreiber finished third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:14.56.
Scoring points for the Blackhawks by finishing in the top five were Walker Ross and Blake Wiley, fourth and fifth in the 200 freestyle, Aaron Brown who was fourth in the 200 IM with Gabe Gerber fifth in the 50 free. Gerber was also fifth in the 100 free, with Schreiber fifth in the 100 butterfly, Ross and Brown fourth and fifth in the 100 backstroke and Wilcox and Geschke fourth and fifth in the 100 breaststroke.
In the relays, the team of Babcock, Schreiber, Gerber and Norman placed second in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3:53.60 while the team of Brown, Wilcox, Schreiber and Noah Jackson was third in the 200 medley in 1:55.73.
Cheney finished with an 8-3 record overall, good enough for second in the Great Northern League/Central Washington Athletic Conference combined standings. Pullman finished at 9-0, 10-1 overall as the combined league’s regular season champion.
Cheney and the other teams get about two weeks to prepare for district competition Feb. 7-8 at Asotin County Aquatic Center in Clarkston. State competition takes place Feb. 21-22 at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way.
