Cheney boys drop three in GNL

CHENEY – The Blackhawks basketball squad saw three Great Northern League games go into the loss column last week, dropping their league mark to 1-6 and 2-12 overall.

Toss out a 75-37 blowout on the road last Saturday at Pullman, and Cheney was in a position to win either one or both games against the Spokane Valley schools earlier in the week. The Blackhawks led 54-45 after three quarters at home against East Valley on Friday, but watched as the Knights caught fire offensively, outscoring the hosts 36-20 for the 81-74 win.

Tuesday at West Valley, Cheney was in striking distance of the Eagles heading into the fourth, down 42-37, but couldn’t find a way to rally and finish, losing 63-52.

The Blackhawks were led offensively last week by senior Quinsie Goodloe, who scored 22 points against both Pullman and East Valley and 12 at West Valley. Josh Whiteley had a season-high 20 points against the Eagles, while Peyton McPherson added 17 against East Valley with Luke Hemenway chipping in 13 against the Knights.

No other information or comments were available at press time.

Cheney currently sits in last place in the GNL, two games behind West Valley (3-4, 7-7) and three games back of East Valley (4-3, 7-8). Pullman resides in second place (4-3, 8-7) while Clarkston (5-1, 9-5) sits atop the standings and is ranked 14th in the 2A state classification according to the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s RPI ratings.

The Bantams were Cheney’s next opponent, hosting the Blackhawks Tuesday, Jan. 28. The Blackhawks return to the area, but not the friendly confines of their court, Thursday, traveling to Spokane to face Rogers High (0-8, 2-12) of the Greater Spokane League.
