MEDICAL LAKE — The Cardinal girls basketball crew extended their winning streak to three with league wins over Northeast A League Lakeside, Colville and Riverside last week.
The Lady Cards played the game head coach Kyle Lundberg has been preaching all year — a four quarter game — when they came away with a solid 49-37 road win against last-place Lakeside (0-8, 1-15) on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Medical Lake took an early 11-5 lead going into the second quarter, but allowed the Eagles to outscore them by two in the second for a 22-18 lead at the half, before pouring on the offense in the third, outscoring Lakeside by 10 points before letting their defense slide in the fourth.
But their two dominant quarters were what gave them the game’s edge and the win.
Emma Maxwell was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points, followed by Ellie Haas with seven and Jaycee Oliver with 8.
On Friday the Lady Cards faced fourth-place Colville (4-5, 9-8) on the home hardwood in a 68-57 victory with a similar strategy of gaining momentum early.
Medical Lake took a two-point lead in the first quarter, then allowed the Indians a five-point margin in the second for a 28-25 Colville lead going into the half, before coming out hot in the third to dominate with a 26-13 quarter for a 51-41 lead to end the quarter.
The fourth was nearly point for point with the Lady Cards holding a one-point quarter advantage to maintain the lead at the final buzzer.
This game it was Lexie Redell’s turn to score 20 points, followed closely by Oliver’s 19 and Maxwell with 16.
The Lady Cards wrapped up last week with their third victory against fifth-place Riverside (2-6, 5-11) at home in a strong 53-38 win that saw them maintain the dominant offense in all but one quarter.
Medical Lake had a 43-23 lead going into the fourth quarter when they allowed the Eagles to outscore them by five.
But it wasn’t enough to erase the Cardinals wide lead, allowing them to finish the game on top.
Redell was the top offensive weapon of the game, leading scoring with 24 points. Maxwell and Allison Duncan were the next closest scorers with nine-points each.
The Lady Cards came into the week second behind Freeman (8-0, 14-2) in the NEA with a 7-1-league record and 7-9 overall, and with third-place Deer Park (6-2, 11-4) in close pursuit.
The Cardinals will face Deer Park tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 31, for the first time this season after two previous games were postponed due to weather, before taking on No. 6 Newport the following Tuesday, Feb. 4.
Then they go up against NEA top dog Freeman (8-0, 14-2) on Thursday, Feb. 6.
They end the regular season the next day, Friday, Feb. 7 when they again take on Deer Park before heading into post-season play.
