CHENEY – The Blackhawks swim team pulled off two victories in convincing style last week. The boys downed Prosser 90-78 and Grandview 109-37 in action at Eastern Washington University’s pool Jan. 14 — Senior Day and Cheney’s last home meet of the season.
Seniors Matthew Norman and Trae Babcock led the Blackhawks with a pair of first-place finishes each. Norman captured the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 6.50 seconds and the 100 free in 55.17 while Babcock won the 50 free in 23.20 and the 100 butterfly in 56.99.
Senior Jared Geschke was first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.91 while sophomore Aaron Brown touched the wall first in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.94. Geschke was second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.19. The Blackhawks team of Norman, Charles Gerber, senior Parker Rogers and Babcock won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.11. The 200 medley relay team of Brown, senior Seth Wilcox, sophomore Ben Schreiber and Gerber was second in 2:04.18 while the 400 freestyle team of Norman, Schreiber, Alexander Rose and Babcock was also second with a time of 3:53.50.
“The kids swam well, but were a little tired after an intense week of competition,” head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said in an email. The Blackhawks had two meets the previous week, one at home Jan. 7 and the other in Yakima Jan. 9.
Last Tuesday’s wins run Cheney’s overall and Great Northern League/Central Washington Athletic Conference records to 8-2, second place, with one meet remaining — Jan. 21 at league-leading Pullman. The Blackhawks will have a bit of time off after that to prepare for district competition Feb. 7-8 at the Asotin County Aquatic Center in Clarkston.
