AIRWAY HEIGHTS – For the third time in four months a Cheney Public School teacher has been named Eastern Washington University's Teacher of the Month.
At an assembly in front of the entire student body on Thursday, Jan. 16, Sunset Elementary School third-grade teacher heard her name called by representatives from EWU, local TV station KHQ and Spokane Teachers Credit Union as the latest district winner of the award. As with other winners, a former student nominated Monroe, and in this case it was Sunset fifth-grader Baylee Fletcher-VanDusen.
"When I was in her class, I really didn't have a lot of friends," Fletcher-VanDusen said in a news release. "I was able to hang out with her, and she was my best friend."
Monroe has been teaching for five years and thanked the students and staff at Sunset for supporting and inspiring her.
"All of you kids and all of the staff I work with - you make it worth coming to school and doing what I do every day," Monroe said.
The Teacher of the Month program is a collaboration between EWU's education department, KHQ News and STCU to recognize outstanding local teachers for their excellence.
The district previously had Salnave Elementary teacher Kyndle Palmer receive the honor in October, followed by Betz Elementary teacher Traci Trotter in November.
