CHENEY – The Blackhawks boys swimming team chalked up three more wins in league action last week at Eastern Washington University’s pool.
Cheney swam to wins over Selah, 101-69, Toppenish, 113-43 and East Valley (Yakima), 120-41. The wins move Cheney record overall and in the Central Washington Athletic Conference/Great Northern League to 4-2, keeping them in second place behind Pullman.
Matthew Norman and Jared Geschke led Cheney with first-place finishes. Norman won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly with times of 2 minutes, 1.03 seconds and 59.76 while Geschke was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.63 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.73.
Luke Hurd finished second in the 100 backstroke in 1:14.61.
In the relays, the 400-freestyle team of Norman, Ben Schreiber, Geschke and Alex Rose took first with a time of 4:03.76 while the 200-freestyle team of Norman, Geschke, Schreiber and Gabe Gerber was second in 1:48.17.
“Several huge time drops across the board despite swimming tired due to intense training over the Christmas break,” head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said.
Cheney wraps up its season this week, having hosted Grandview and Prosser on Tuesday, Jan. 14 and then heading to Pullman to face the league-leading Greyhounds (7-1, 6-0) on Jan. 21 in the season finale. The Blackhawks get a breather, at least from a competitive swimming standpoint, before traveling to Yakima’s Lions Pool for the district meet, Feb. 7-8.
“We have a couple more weeks of intensity and will then taper off into preparing for our big meets,” Hochwalt said.
