The Cheney City Council welcomed two new members to its ranks. After being sworn in, Councilman Fred Pollard took his seat, while Tom Truelove once again filled the mayor’s chair, his third non-consecutive term on the council.

The Cheney Planning Commission approved the 33-acre Terra Vista planned unit development that included lot sizes 3,000 square feet smaller than the code at the time allowed, allowing developer Steve Emtman and consulting engineer Todd Whipple to sell 60 townhouse units rather than attached single-family apartments.

A threat warning of a Columbine-type shooting spree scrawled in pencil on toilet tissue in a Medical Lake High School bathroom stall led to controversy when the school was opened after the holiday break anyway without notice to students or parents about the threat. Jan. 18, 1990

Three Spokane County Commissioners got an earful of negative comments regarding the siting of an ash landfill in the southwestern area of the county in a packed, two-hour public meeting at the Tyler Grange Hall.

Cheney Police Chief Jerry Gardner reported that 1989 proved an uneventful year for crime, and a drop in serious offenses — homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault theft, auto theft and arson — was down over 10 percent.

Despite national inflation, Shorty Watson, the Chairman of the Cheney Merchants Association, said the outlook for city retailers remained “good.”

Medical Lake Police Chief Bruce Randall reported an increase in arrests involving drugs, minor thefts and an increase in bad-check writing in an annual. The drugs involved were mostly marijuana.
