The Kalispel Tribe opened its 10-story, 250-room, $80 million-plus hotel in Airway Heights just hours before ringing in the New Year, added 325 new jobs to the region.

The Medical Lake City Council unanimously approved a resolution that retained the city’s involvement in a 10-year Spokane County regional homeless program that included the goal of reducing homelessness in Washington by 50 percent by 2015.

Relief was expressed that the transition to the new decade, millennia and century didn’t cause the world to fall into chaos. “It was a happy non-event,” Cheney Fire Chief John Montague said.

The Medical Lake wrestling team took first place in a regional tournament at Rogers High School, much to the surprise of everyone, including head coach Sam Peterson. “We really wrestled well,” he said of the meet where the Cardinals topped Rogers and Chewelah.

Jan. 11, 1990

Heyer Point, just north of Interstate 90 near Tyler, was chosen as the preferred site for disposal of tons of residue ash, a by-product of a proposed trash incinerator, according to a liaison board of representatives of Spokane County and the city of Spokane, much to the disapproval of a group of local residents called the Lance Hill/Heyer Point Coalition.

The Cheney yearbook staff once again earned national first-place honors from the American Scholastic Press Association for their 1988-89 yearbook. They were previously recognized for their 1987 and 1988 yearbooks.

Jan. 10, 1980

Year-over-year crime in Cheney increased by 32.5-percent, according to Police Chief Jerry Gardner. Among other crimes, thefts increased from 171 in 1978 to 238 in 1979.

A two-bedroom unfurnished apartment duplex with washer and dryer, dishwasher, carport and small yard for children was advertised in the classified section of the Cheney Free Press for $210 per month with a $100 deposit.
