HANFORD — The Medical Lake wrestling team limped in, then limped out of Hanford High School’s Winter Cup tournament on Saturday, Dec. 28, taking 13th place overall in a field of 23 teams after a bug swept through the team.
“Our team is all coming off of being sick,” head coach Matt Leenhouts said.
Ethan Davis was the lone first place Cardinal wrestler in the 170-pound weight class, taking out Liberty-Spangle’s Jesse Turner in a close 6-5 decision, while Brent Keith finished third, also in the 170-class, on a quick 1 minute, 35 second pin of Southridge’s Shawn Gegg.
Victor Long managed a sixth-place finish at 152 on an 8-3 decision.
Alex Gonzalez took eighth-place at 132, the result of being pulled from further competition due to illness, winning two of his three matches.
“He tried to tough it out and finish the tournament, but I pulled him,” Leenhouts said.
Aden Carl lost in the Consolation A championship round in the 126-weight class on a 10-4 decision.
The Cardinals will be traveling across the West Plains to Cheney for the Scabland Scuffle dual on Wednesday, Jan. 8, beginning at 7 a.m., followed by a league road match against Colville the next day.
“We’re looking to step it up against the defending state champion team at the Colville Dual,” Leenhouts said.
