Blackhawk basketball crews go 0-3 against Idaho schools teams

CHENEY — Cheney High School basketball squads found competition in the nearby state of Idaho to be pretty challenging last week.

The Blackhawk boys are still looking for their first win under new head coach Frankie Keplinger, falling to 0-6 on the season with losses at Coeur d’Alene on Dec. 18, 62-50, and at Lakeland on Dec. 21, 76-45. The Lady Blackhawks lost their lone match up of the week, a 55-49 setback at home against Coeur d’Alene where getting out-scored 20-10 in the second quarter proved to be the difference.

Maggie Smith led the Cheney girls and all scorers with 23 points, with Emma Evans adding 15.

The Cheney boys again had trouble putting the ball through the hoop, getting outscored 26-12 and 24-10 in the decisive second and fourth quarters at Lakeland and in every quarter at Coeur d’Alene. Kaiden Custer led the Blackhawks with 16 points against the Vikings and 11 points against the Lakeland Hawks.

Both Cheney squads wrap up 2019 and the non-league season this Friday by hosting one more Idaho school – Lake City of Coeur d’Alene.
