Cheney gymnasts earn first win

MEAD – Cheney High School’s gymnastics team kicked off the 2019 portion of its season with a win at a Greater Spokane League meet hosted by Mount Spokane High School in north Spokane. The Blackhawks went 1-3 against the four teams in attendance, losing to the host Wildcats 164-90, to Rogers 109-90 and to University 150-90 but pulling out a 90-63 win over North Central.

New head coach Moriah Knowles said Cheney had one athlete who placed in events, junior Lauren O’Callaghan. The Blackhawks only competitor at state last winter was sixth on the beam with a score of 7.45, ninth on the vault with a score of 7.8 and 10th on bars with a 6.0.

Knowles said the next highest Cheney placer was 23rd, but was pleased with how her team competed against two teams — Mt. Spokane and University — that could be in the top three of the GSL when the post season arrives. The Blackhawks did well for their first competition, and should improve.

“We’ll probably see higher scores the next meet,” Knowles said.

That meet was Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the Old Albertsons Gymnastics Center on North Division against Shadle Park, Mead and North Central, with Mt. Spokane again playing hosts. Cheney will host a meet on Jan. 7 at Central Valley High School against Mt. Spokane, North Central and Lewis and Clark.
