Friday rollover sends two to hospital

MEDICAL LAKE — Two people were transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center after a one-car rollover injury accident on Friday morning, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The vehicle was traveling eastbound on Interstate 90 when the driver fell asleep just west of the Salnave Road exit and began drifting toward the left shoulder.

He apparently woke up and overcorrected to the right to avoid the median and instead ended up sliding into a tree in the right-hand side of the road.

The driver, 26-year-old Johnathan Cortez of Yakima, was airlifted from the scene to the hospital with undisclosed injuries, while the passenger, 28-year-old Carlos Negrete, was transported by ambulance.

The eastbound lanes of the freeway were temporarily closed to accommodate a Life Flight helicopter.

Both men were wearing seatbelts. No drugs or alcohol were involved, according the State Patrol.

Cortez was cited for negligent driving.
