Construction of the Washington State Veterans Cemetery in Medical Lake continued in advance of a planned Memorial Day opening

The Cheney girls soccer team blanked both Prosser and Ellensburg to earn a trip to the state 2A soccer Final Four in Puyallup.

Members of the Cheney Parks Board discussed at a meeting the failure of Proposition 1, a bond measure that would have funded a 50-acre city park. Although it gained over 50 percent voter support, it failed to reach the 60 percent super majority required for passage by 66 votes.

The availability of housing for Medical Lake’s first-time and secondary buyers as complaints of low-quality and sub-par housing and their cost, and the cost of rentals in the city of nearly 3,900 people was becoming an increasing concern.

After the polls closed early in the month it was clear Cheney was one of the minority of cities that voted against I-695, the $30 tab initiative.

The final plat for the Fox Hollow subdivision was unanimously approved by the Medical Lake City Council.

Nov. 23, 1989

An Eastern Washington University student sued the city of Cheney for the return of a seized vehicle and $50,000 in punitive damages. The car was seized during a drug transaction. An arrest warrant was issued for the owner, a Japanese student who had since returned home.

The Cheney Blackhawk football team defeated the Clarkston Bantams to advance to the state semi-finals for the second year in a row.

Medical Lake Elementary School raised nearly $900 in a turkey raffle ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. The turkeys, donated by local businesses, had an estimated cost of more than $500.

Nov. 22, 1979

The city of Cheney applied to become one of six test sites for a federal one megawatt solar/thermal power plant.

The Medical Lake Town Council accepted a $115,000 federal grant tor improvements to Waterfront Park to increase accessibility of the park for the handicapped and elderly.

After factoring inflation, the $394,000 1980 Medical Lake city budget will remain bare-bones — just like the year before. “It’s hard to cut back any further,” Town Administrator Mike McCurdy said. The 1970 budget was $356,000.
