CHENEY – The Lady Blackhawks slow pitch softball team wrapped up its inaugural season of play with three losses last week, including a doubleheader setback at fellow Greater Spokane League 2A/3A opponent Rogers.
Cheney fell 6-4 to GSL 4A University High on Oct. 15, rallying to take a 3-2 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth but watching as the host Titans responded with four runs in the bottom half of the frame for the win. Cheney out hit University 11-9, with Bella King and Kerttu Pertanen getting two hits each, including two doubles.
Thursday, Cheney again had to battle from behind at Rogers, trailing 11-1 after four innings before rallying for five runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth, only to fall 12-8 in game one. Lindsay Hagreen was 2 for 4 with four RBIs to lead Cheney’s 10-hit offensive attack.
In the nightcap, the Lady Blackhawks never had much of a chance, trailing 11-0 after the first two innings in their 13-2 loss to end the regular season.
Cheney finishes its first year of slow pitch play at 6-10 in the GSL, 8-12 overall, and secured the league’s No. 4 seed into this week’s 2A/3A playoffs with Hermiston and Grandview from the Washington Mountain Conference. The Lady Blackhawks hosted fellow GSL 2A East Valley, the No. 5 seed, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, in a first-round playoff game, with the winner advancing to play either No. 1 seed Mt. Spokane or No. 2 seed Hermiston on Oct. 24 and the loser ending their season.
Cheney split with East Valley, losing to the Knights 18-16 on Sept. 16 and winning 14-5 on Sept. 30. If the Lady Blackhawks advance, they would need to win one of the next two games in order to qualify for the 2A/3A state tournament Nov. 1-2 at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
