Cheney volleyball drops two

CHENEY — The Lady Blackhawks volleyball crew dropped two more matches in the past week against East Valley and Pullman as the regular season winds to a close.

”We really took a hit having both East Valley and Pullam in the same week,” head coach Heather Zorrozua said. “These are two teams that we can compete with and definitely can take charge of but struggle to control the rollercoaster that is momentum.”

The Blackhawks took a loss against East Valley on Thursday, Oct. 17 on the road, fighting hard to an eventual match loss in five sets 27-25, 23-25, 15-25, 25-22, 12-15.

Junior Sara Graham had 29 assists, senior Shelby Draper and junior Hope Schneider had two aces, Junior Emily Ek had 27 digs, and senior Abby Witt had five blocks.

The loss bumped the Blackhawks out of second place to third seed, according to coach April Stark.

Cheney hosted Pullman on Saturday, Oct. 19, losing in three straight sets 27-25, 25-19 and 26-24.

“Our girls really do a great job of getting runs of points, against Pullman. Unfortunately, so did they,” Zorrozua said.

Draper had eight kills and four blocks, Graham 27 assists and two aces and junior Avery Stark nine digs.

“We lost in three, but it was some great volleyball,” Stark said, noting that some team members were left out of the match to heal.

At press time the Lady Blackhawks were scheduled to travel to Clarkston (1-7, 7-11) on Tuesday, Oct. 22, followed by West Valley (1-7, 4-9) at home today, Thursday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.

“We are excited to continue to prepare as we enter the last two matches of league and untimely the district tournament where we will face multiple teams for a fourth time this year,” Zorrozua said.
