Cardinal volleyball continues to flounder

MEDICAL LAKE — With only a few more games remaining in the regular season, the Cardinal volleyball crew remains the only Northeast A League team without a league win after dropping two more.

On Oct. 8, Medical Lake traveled to Nine Mile Falls to face the Lakeside Eagles, losing in three sets 25-11, 25-13, 25-16.

“This week the team competed at a much higher level and found a way to battle each night,” head coach Todd Harr said in an email. “The team is fighting off a sickness that created new spots for individuals to step up.”

He said that several players stepped into varsity play and exceeded his expectations in new roles, noting that sophomore Tyana Newman was brought up from junior varsity to not only start at middle for the first time, but lead the team in kills.

“Tyana brings a newfound energy to the team and has helped the team not only physically on the court, but mentally as well,” Harr said.

Likewise, sophomores Ellie Haas stepped up at right side hitter for the team, while Amblessed Okemgbo continued a consistent season leading in kills and blocks, Harr said.

“The team ramps up its playoff push for the next couple of weeks and looks to right the ship after some tough early season losses,” Harr said of upcoming matches.

Medical Lake also lost on the road to Freeman on Thursday, Oct. 10. Details and box scores were unavailable by press time.

The Cardinals were sitting in last place at 0-7 in league play and 1-12 overall at press time. They were scheduled to face Newport (2-5,4-6) at home on Tuesday, Oct. 15, then travel to top seeded powerhouse Riverside (8-0, 11-1) tonight, Thursday, Oct. 17 with the first serve at 7 p.m.
