CHENEY – Cheney High’s girls’ soccer team got a pair of second-half goals and held on for a 2-1 win over visiting West Valley in a battle of Great Northern League unbeaten teams last Thursday.
After a scoreless first half, the Lady Blackhawks finally broke through in the 66th minute on a goal by Kaitlin Teeters, assisted by Kailey Estrellado. Makenna Benson made it 2-0 five minutes later with a goal off an assist by Lexi VanHorne.
“That’s Makenna’s eighth goal of the season already,” head coach Nels Radtke wrote in an email.
West Valley’s Emma Price got the Eagles on the board with a goal in the 73rd minute, assisted by Rylen Palmer. But from there, Cheney’s defense tightened up again and held West Valley off in the final seven minutes.
Cheney had nine shots on goal to West Valley’s four. The Lady Blackhawks goalkeeper had four saves, while the Eagles’ Madison Maloney made seven.
Cheney goes to 4-0 in the GNL, 5-2 overall, 12 points while West Valley drops to 3-1, also 5-2 with nine points. The teams will meet two more times, Oct. 10 at West Valley and Oct. 24 in Cheney in the regular season finale for both schools.
After a light schedule last week, the Lady Blackhawks return to the league pitch this week, hosting third-place East Valley (2-2, 4-4, 6 points) on Tuesday and traveling to take on last place Pullman (0-4, 0-7) Thursday.
