Cardinal boys cross country takes invitational

The Medical Lake cross country crew continued its winning streak during its third meet of the season, walking away from the Nike Portland Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28, in Grisham, Ore. as the Division 3 Boys champions, scoring 39 points.

The Cardinals were again led by Quintin Collins, who finished third overall, crossing the finish line at 16 minutes, 37 seconds. Freshman Reid Headrick was close on his heels, placing fourth at 16:43. Victor Long was eighth at 16:58, Angel Mendez 11th at 17:06 and Benjamin Henry finished 14th place with a time of 17:25.

Connor Palmen and Kyler Castro finished 6th and 7th respectively, helping displace opponent runners from other teams.

Medical Lake’s closest competition came from Fillmore, Calif.

The girls’ varsity competed in the small school’s division, finishing second to Silverdale’s Klahoywa Secondary with 56 points.

Paige Headrick finished ninth overall at 20:49, followed closely by Allison Payne in 10th place with a time of 20:51. Grace Grubaugh took 17th place at 21:19, Jenna Castro 23rd place, with a time of 21:51, and Katie was the Cardinal fifth place scorer at 22:35 and a 30th place finish. Maris Tuck was 36th and the teams sixth finisher, and in her first race, freshman Hailey Cross finished 47th.

The Cardinal boys junior varsity, running in the Division 3 race, scored 65 points finishing second to Northwest, led by Thomas Collins, who earned second overall in 18:19, freshman Sam Ornelas in ninth place with 19:01, Vincent Long in 15th place at 19:14, freshman Luke Dickey, also running in his first race, took 18th place in 19:21, followed by Alex Dunay at 21st in 19:24.

While Medical Lake was unable to field an entire team, in the boys and girls 3000-meter race, Sophia Dienemann, Mia Thompson and Michaela Eberhardt, Urijah Taylor, Preston Dyess and Jaden Nelson all ran well, according to head coach Gene Blankenship.

Nike Portland competitors of the meet were Grubaugh and Collins.

Cardinal pins — in recognition of competitors who put in a “best effort” as judged by coaches — went to Alex Dunay, Connor Palemon, Victor Long, Tyalor, Luke Dickey, Sam Russell, Thompson, Sophia Dienemann, Hailey Cross and Henna Van Dingenen.

The Cardinals took away a total of 25 race medals for their performance at the invitational.

Medical Lake will host Lakeside and Colville on Wednesday, Oct. 2, for the Northeast A’s first league meet, followed by the CAN-AM Invite in Kettle falls Saturday, Oct. 5, then travel to Newport for the NEA second meet on Wednesday, Oct. 9.
