Blackhawks sink Clarkston in dual swim meet

CHENEY – Cheney High’s girls swimming team won seven of eight individual events and swept all three relays in a 122-33 dual meet win over visiting Clarkston last Thursday at Eastern Washington University’s pool. The Blackhawks went 1-2-3 in four of their seven individual event finishes against the Bantams.

“They are a smaller team with some really competitive swimmers,” Cheney head coach Jennifer Hochwalt said of the visitors.

Sisters Asia and Jade Gere, Janie Richards and Ainsley Glennen took first in their events. Asia Gere was first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 6.69 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:06.33. Adelyn O’Dell was second in the 200 free with Ally Hughes third while Echo Mecklenburg placed second in the 100 butterfly.

Jade Gere was first in the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke with times of 26.64 and 1:15.20. Hughes and Jenae Potter went 2-3 in the breaststroke while Lauren O’Callaghan was second in the in the 50 free, with Hope Zaragoza fourth.

Richards touched the wall first in the 100 free and 100 backstroke in times of 58.45 and 1:02.76, besting the state time of 1:03.90 in the latter. O’Dell was second and Rebecca Purviance third in the 100 free while Mecklenburg and Zaragoza went 3-4 in the backstroke.

Glennen took first in the 500 free with a time of 7:16.93, with Izzy Williams in second and Logan Krantz third.

All three relay teams took first. The 200-medley team of Williams, Mecklenburg, Hughes and Zaragoza got the meet started with a first-place time of 2:18.77. Richards, Asia Gere, Williams and Jade Gere teamed to win the 200-free in 1:50.64, with the team of O’Dell, Zaragoza, Hughes and Glennen second.

Finally, the team of Asia Gere, Richards, O’Dell and Jade Gere won the 400 free in 4:01.17, with the team of Mecklenburg, Zaragoza, O’Callaghan and Purviance second.

“Our swimmers trained hard right through the meet so we focused on good racing techniques and strategies rather than times,” Hochwalt said. “I am very happy with where we are at this point in the season.”

Cheney continues a busy schedule, albeit away from the friendly confines of Eastern’s pool. The Blackhawks travel to Lion’s Pool in Yakima for a multi-team meet with Selah and East Valley (Yakima) this Saturday and remains on the road with a trip to Clarkston on Friday, Oct. 11.

Cheney’s next home meet is Thursday, Oct. 17 against Prosser and Grandview at 3 p.m. at EWU.
