Medical Lake fifth grade teacher Darrell John was awarded the KHQ Teacher of the Month award.

The Blackhawk football squad narrowly escaped a loss to the Cardinals in a 14-13 win on a late touchdown by Daniel Igbinoba.

The Eastern Washington University Eagles rushed for 190 yards and a 56-30 win over Sacramento State.

Cheney FFA and 4-H clubs brought home numerous awards from the Spokane Interstate Fair.

Sept. 30, 1999

Medical Lake resident Sharon L. Curry confessed to stabbing to death her daughter, 8-year-old Jessica Lynne Curry, in a failed murder-suicide attempt.

A 25-year veteran of the Cheney Police, Lt. Greg Lopes, was unanimously confirmed by the City Council as the new police chief after a lengthy search.

Although sympathizing with voters, Ninth District state Representative Mark Schoesler (R-Ritzville) said he couldn’t support Initiative 695 that would lower the Motor Vehicle Excise Tax — car tabs — to $30.

Sept 28, 1989

The Reardan Indians football team took advantage of Medical Lake errors to take home a 14-12 win in which the Cardinals fumbled the ball seven times, turning it over five times.

Suggestion boxes were distributed in Cheney seeking ideas for items to be placed in a time capsule by the Cheney Centennial Committee in celebration of the state’s centennial.

The Medical Lake City Council got a look at a proposed capital improvement plan four years in the making, according to Mayor George Ramsey, who called it an “excellent council resource when budgeting each year.”

Oct. 4, 1979

The city of Cheney decided to drop a Housing and Urban Development grant for park development because the federal agency had not funded a park in 12 years.

The Medical Lake City Council heard an update regarding a study related to improvements to Campbell Street intended for children’s safety. Councilman Jack Davis noted that a police survey found the average speed on the street was 23 miles per hour. The posted speed was 25.

The Cardinal’s won their football game against East Valley 12-8, while the Blackhawks lost to the Lewiston Bengals 21-7.

Oct. 2, 1969

The state rodeo finals held at the Cheney Rodeo grounds attracted 3,300 attendees, according to Rodeo President Skip Duty, while the Saturday dance sold 230 tickets.

Persh Harris and some friends used dynamite to excavate a stock pond near Tyler. Harris, a dynamite expert, said he had been using the method “over the years,” because it was “quick, relatively inexpensive and scatters the dirt, which eliminates piles of earth around the pond.”
