Lady Blackhawks still winless in slow pitch softball

Cheney High’s first slow pitch softball win in its inaugural season is proving elusive. The Lady Blackhawks suffered three more defeats and play last week.

Cheney was shutout 15-0 by 4A powerhouse Central Valley last Tuesday, Sept. 17, managing just four hits against the visitors from Spokane Valley in the five-inning game. The Lady Blackhawks got singles from Miranda Barber, Tatum Sloan, Isabella King and Lindsay Hagreen. Cheney also committed four errors.

Thursday the Lady Blackhawks got on the board against 3A Shadle Park, but it took over six innings to do so, scoring in the top of the seventh in a 7-1 loss to the Highlanders. Cheney had eight hits, two from Jasmine Rison (single, double) and two from Barber. Hagreen, Sloan, Rhosewen Caskey and Makenna Olson also had singles.

Monday the Lady Blackhawks took an early lead against visiting unbeaten Mt. Spokane, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first for a 4-0 margin. Unfortunately, Cheney couldn’t make that stand up as the Greater Spokane League leaders scored in each of the next innings except the seventh — including a seven-run fifth — to run away for a 17-10 win.

Cheney managed 15 hits, but also gave up nine errors. Hagreen, Sloan and Makyla Ward each had three hits with King and Madison O’Riley two each. King drove in three runs.

Cheney drops to 0-4 in GSL play, 0-6 overall. The Lady Blackhawks next games come against Gonzaga Prep (1-3, 2-3) on Sept. 24, North Central (0-4, 0-4) Thursday, Sept. 26 and East Valley (1-3, 1-5) on Monday, Sept. 30.
