State funding available for historic barns and cemeteries

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation has announced a new round of grant funding for preservation of historic barns and cemeteries. The funding, done in partnership with the state Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP), carries an application deadline of Oct. 23.

Two grants are available: one for historic barns, in its seventh round of funding, and one for cemeteries, in its second round. The grants are made available to owners of barns and those with stewardship responsibilities over historic cemeteries.

The Heritage Barn Initiative established the Heritage Barn Register in 2007, is a statewide list of historically significant barns. Owners of designated Heritage Barns are once again eligible to apply for matching grants available to assist with barn stabilization and rehabilitation projects. The Historic Cemetery Preservation Program is intended to honor veterans and support the ongoing preservation of historic cemeteries through funding for capital projects.

Approximately $900,000 is available to be granted through both programs; $450,000 for each.

The deadline to submit applications for both grant programs is Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2019. Applications and more information for each program can be accessed through the DAHP website.

In addition, anyone interested in learning more about these programs is invited to a workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Spokane County District Library’s downtown Spokane branch, 906 W. Main St. Information on historic cemetery grans will be presented from 6-7 p.m., with information on historic barn funding to follow from 7-8 p.m.
