Cheney Parks and Recreation holds school resource fair Aug. 22

Cheney’s Parks and Recreation Department is holding a back to school resource fair for students and their families gearing up for classes this fall.

The resource fair takes place Thursday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. – noon at the Wren Pierson Community Center, 615 4th St., next door to the city’s fire station. Organizations such as CHAS, Cheney Outreach, Rockwood Clinic, Eastern Washington University Dental Clinic and Communities in Schools have come together to help provide useful information to parents, haircuts from six local stylists and a giveaway of 200 backpacks filled with needed school supplies.

“I don’t know if we’ll have enough (supplies) to fill every backpack but we’ll be close,” Cheney recreation coordinator Dan Curley said.

Curley added the fair has been put together somewhat on short notice, but the organizations contacted were excited about chipping in to help out. The city has also received help from two new church plants in Cheney — Summit Church and Real Life Church.
